Light in the Storm
Reading: Matthew 8:23-27 - Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
John 16:33 - “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Devotional: In Rembrandt's painting "The Sea of Galilee," disciples panic in different ways during a violent storm—some pray, some work frantically, some grow physically ill. Yet in the center of the chaos sits an illuminated figure: Jesus, the light within the darkness.
You will face dark storms. Jesus promised this: "In this world you will have trouble." But He immediately followed with hope: "But take heart! I have overcome the world." The question isn't whether darkness will come, but where we'll look when it does.
Often we respond like the disciples—trying to fix everything ourselves, overcome by fear, attempting to steer through the chaos. Meanwhile, the Light of the World sits in the boat with us, waiting for us to turn our attention to Him.
What storm are you navigating right now? Instead of closing your eyes and hoping nothing bad happens, open them and look for Jesus. He's there, illuminated in your darkness, offering not just survival but peace in the midst of the storm.
